General Questions

What is F2T?

F2T is our newest wellness and fitness program. Born as an extension of the IAFF/IAFC Peer Fitness Trainer (PFT) program, F2T is designed to support the IAFF/IAFC Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI) by helping more fire fighters be more active, more often.

How will F2T benefit me and my department?

The F2T program will provide direct and immediate access to resources that help every certified member serve in their role as a wellness and fitness ambassador. This includes resources tailored to address specific departmental needs. F2T will emphasize practical strategies that improve physical, psychological and social well-being; accommodate the diverse needs and interests of all fire fighters; and make education, training, mentorship and support accessible – all while promoting solutions to change behaviors.

What types of resources will be made available?

F2T members will have access to a wide range of resources including virtual, online and in-person courses and workshops; webinars with industry leaders; implementation guidelines for exercise programming; wellness education and return-to-work protocols; mobility and fitness assessment tools; a series of questionnaires and surveys; and practical strategies to influence the physical activity behaviors of all fire fighters.

How do I become an F2T member?

Anybody can join the F2T program as a ‘Non-Certified Member’ by creating an account HERE. Creating an account will provide you access to your individualized member portal, access to a suite of free resources, and allow you to browse all educational opportunities that the F2T program has to offer. If you’d like to learn more about becoming certified within the F2T program, please visit the Membership Page.

What are the benefits to being certified by the IAFF/IAFC instead of ACE?

ACE is and will continue to be a respected fitness organization and a partner of the IAFF and IAFC. However, over the past 25 years, the IAFF and IAFC have positioned themselves as authorities on fire fighter wellness and fitness by assembling a task force comprising fire fighters, fire chiefs, labor leaders, researchers, physicians, clinicians, and wellness and fitness professionals. Assuming oversight of the PFT Certificate will allow us to better serve the fire service by providing education, training, support and mentorship via the F2T program.

Does F2T have additional levels of membership, training and certificates in addition to the PFT certificate?

Yes. The F2T program also involves two certificates aside from the PFT Certificate. The Fitness Performance Specialist (FPS) Certificate reflects a more advanced level of training and the Wellness-Fitness Ambassador (WFA) Certificate reflects a more foundational level of training. Each certificate is associated with a membership that offers access to resources specific to that level of training, in addition to general benefits associated with F2T membership. Further details on the certification and renewal process for each certificate level can be found HERE.

What are the initial and ongoing costs associated with each level of F2T membership?

The initial and ongoing costs associated with each certificate level can be found on the webpages for the Fitness Performance Specialist (FPS), Peer Fitness Trainer (PFT), and Wellness-Fitness Ambassador (WFA) certificates respectively.

What is the F2T refund, exchange and transfer policy?

The full F2T payment & registration refund, exchange, and transfer policy can be found HERE

What is the process to renew my F2T certificate?

Each certificate level has different continuing education requirements to recertify. The recertification requirements associated with each certificate level can be found on the webpages for the Fitness Performance Specialist (FPS), Peer Fitness Trainer (PFT), and Wellness-Fitness Ambassador (WFA) certificates respectively. For complete information on what is required to renew, we encourage you to visit our Certificate Renewal page.

Certificate Renewal

How do I check my CEC/renewal requirement status?

Log into your account, click the ‘My Profile’ tab at the top and then choose ‘Dashboard’. Your CECs (both earned via F2T education and 3rd party CECs you’ve reported) will be displayed. If your renewal fee has been paid, it will appear under the ‘My Courses’ section on your dashboard, named ‘F2T Certificate Renewal (YYYY Renewal)’.

How do I report my CECs earned from F2T events/education?

All CECs earned from F2T events will automatically be credited to your account.

How do I report CECs earned from 3rd parties?

Log in, navigate to your profile and click the ‘CEC Reporting’ tab. This page details all the information you must submit to report the 3rd party CECs. While you aren’t required to upload any documentation when reporting, if audited, you will need to provide verification of your attendance at a particular event (e.g. certificate of attendance/achievement etc.). Once uploaded, these CECs will automatically populate on your dashboard.

NOTE – 3rd party CECs are awarded at a ratio of 0.5 CECs per 1 hour of education.

Can I report CPR/AED or BLS certification for CECs?

No, CPR/AED, BLS or other similar certifications are not acceptable to be reported as 3rd party CECs.

When does my certificate expire?

All certificates are valid for a minimum of 2 years and always expire on December 31st of the year of expiry. To determine the exact year that your certificate expires, navigate to your dashboard and look for your expiry date under your name. It can also be found on your certificate, which can also be found in your dashboard underneath your name.

How do I know if I’ve met all renewal requirements?

The status of your renewal requirements can be found by navigating to your ‘Dashboard’ within your profile. F2T CEC and 3rd party CEC status can be found on the progress bars and if your renewal fee has been paid, it will appear under ‘My Courses’ as ‘F2T Certificate Renewal (YYYY Renewal)’.

Note that every certificate level has different renewal requirements and a minimum number of CECs that must come from F2T education. Complete details on each can be found HERE.

Once all requirements have been met and it is within 6 months of your expiry date, our team will contact you to inform you that all requirements have been met. We aim to do this at the end of every month July – September, every 2 weeks October – November, and every week during December.

Is there a grace period to renew my certificate?

Certain penalties will apply if you complete your requirements after the expiry date. A 50$ late fee will apply for 12 months after the expiry date and greater penalties will apply if renewing after that period. Complete details can be found in the Complete CEC Policies linked on this PAGE. Navigate to the ‘Late Renewals and Reinstatement’ section in the document.

If I earn more CECs than required for a reporting period, will they roll over to the next renewal cycle?

No, CECs do not roll over. All CECs must be earned within their respective renewal period.

I reported all my CECs and paid my renewal fee, why am I still getting emails from F2T saying my renewal is not complete?

You may not have completed all requirements. There are a few things to double check if you are still receiving renewal notices:

1) Did you complete the requisite number of F2T CECs AND the total number of CECs required to renew? There is a minimum number of F2T CECs that must be earned for each certificate level.

2) Did an administrator/coordinator at your department pay for your renewal? We may be waiting for payment to clear before applying the renewal fee to your account. Contact your administrator/coordinator to determine if payment has been made.

3) There may be outstanding coupons that an administrator purchased that you need to redeem on your account. Contact your administrator to determine if there are coupons for you to use.

4) Did you complete all renewal requirements within a few weeks of receiving the notice? There is a small lapse of time from when the mailing list is pulled to when notices are sent out.

What is acceptable content for 3rd party CECs?

Only education that falls within the scope of health, wellness and fitness will be accepted as CECs for an F2T certificate. Complete details can be found in the Complete CEC Policies linked on this PAGE. Navigate to the ‘Acceptable Content for CECs’ section in the document.

Note that completing tasks normally associated with being an F2T certified individual within your department (conducting fitness evaluations, designing and implementing programming to your members etc.) are NOT acceptable content to be submitted as 3rd party CECs.

F2T 101 Course

What will I learn in F2T 101?

F2T 101 introduces an integrated approach to the physical preparation of fire fighters for work, life and play. The central tenet of this approach is that every fire fighter, regardless of age, experience, fitness or job status, needs the capacity to meet the demands of their life. The framework and principles taught will help attendees establish exercise recommendations for peers with diverse needs and interests. Specifically, upon completing this course (in-person and virtual delivery), students will have improved their ability to:

  • Apply the demands-capacity framework (work, life, play)
  • Observe, assess and interpret the movement patterns of others
  • Design exercise sessions that suit a range of objectives, interests and physical abilities
  • Perform, demonstrate and coach a variety of simple and complex exercises
  • Communicate, ask questions, and give and receive feedback
  • Think critically, problem solve and work with others
How does the virtual option develop practical skills?

First, participants will receive access to a series of online practical activities (e.g., observation, coaching and program design applications) that can be completed on their own time to reinforce the course material. Second, participants will engage in weekly group activities that include a series of hands-on activities, each of which involves multiple experiences to reinforce relevant skills related to assessment, program design, implementation and leadership.

What are the biggest differences between the in-person and virtual course options?
  • Course schedule – Four consecutive eight-hour days versus two, two-hour virtual interactions per week over six weeks.
  • Enrollment – Minimum of 25 students coordinated by host department versus no minimum enrollment and no host department.
  • Course format – Lectures and small/large group activities versus video lectures and Zoom small/large group activities.
  • Course package – The host department receives equipment versus optional individual equipment packages for virtual participants.
  • One-on-one instructor interaction – The virtual course includes a one-on-one meeting with the F2T Team to discuss course orientation, expectations, and answers any questions.
How will the online/virtual course be run?

The six-week online F2T 101 course is delivered asynchronously (on your own time) and synchronously (with IAFF instructors) using interactive small and large-group activities, case studies and virtual exercise sessions. Specifically, prior to each of the first four weeks, students will be given access to a series of videos and learning activities that detail each of the associated modules. Approximately two hours per week will be required to complete these learning activities. In addition, students will participate in 11 two-hour virtual group activities over the six-week period with 15-25 other individuals. Four scheduling options are available for these group activities.

My department is interested in hosting an in-person F2T 101 course. What are the first steps to begin the process?

In order to host an in-person F2T 101 course, interested departments should complete the pre-approval process detailed HERE. Once submitted, we will review your documentation and contact you with a proposed date and details about payment and registration.

I have a member with a vast amount of knowledge, experience, and/or other certifications in the fitness and personal training industry. Is there an option for them to challenges the F2T 101 PFT exam without attending the F2T 101 course?

In general, we do not allow individuals with other fitness-related education and certifications to challenge the F2T 101 exam without taking the course. We do understand and appreciate the overlap with some other professional designations, but consider the F2T 101 course to be sufficiently unique in its scope, experience and overall learning objectives. In contrast to other fitness-related courses, degrees, etc., F2T 101 is specific to the fire service, emphasizes wellness and fitness program implementation, and provides practical experiences to reinforce the many roles that PFTs might play. These differences are part of what will help to establish the foundation for an effective Fit To Thrive program.
